The spring and autumn equinox (20th – 21st March and 21st – 22nd September) are arguably THE time to visit the great archaeological site of Chichen Itza on the Yukatan peninsula. In both the morning and evening of these four days the angle of the sun casts a shadow on the famous El Castillo pyramid which makes it look like a serpent is winding its way down the structure. The head of the snake being at the bottom of the steps on El Castillo. The only problem with going at this time of the year is that you can guarantee it will be crowded.

I have been fortunate to visit Chichen Itza, although not during an equinox. The site is huge (see Chichen Itza article) – allow the best part of a day to really take it in, and for this reason I would recommend hiring a car and ‘going it alone’ with a good guide book or hiring a private guide rather than going on a day trip from a hotel when you are only likely to get 2-3 hours at the site. Hiring a car is easy – we got ours from Cancun. The drive was about 3 hours on reasonable dual carriage way roads, and we made an overnight stay in nearby Merida so we could visit nearby site of Uxmal the next day. I would definitely recommend a visit to Uxmal too if history is your thing. Making our own way there was definitely the right thing to do – for us.

A wonderful week celebrating the history of Whitstable, its heritage – and of course Oysters!

This year’s festival starts on Saturday 18th through to 25th July; and to whet your appetite I’ll start with its history.
As far back as Norman times fishers and dredgers held and annual ceremony to give thanks for their survival and the harvest. It was always held during the closed season for oysters so their business was not interrupted. It was considered a ‘Holy Day’, when the townsfolk attended a formal church ceremony and then the rest of the day passed with feasting, dancing, playing games and contests. The festival was reintroduced in the 1980’s (the industry was almost wiped out in the 1920’s due to disease and over fishing).

Here are a few more facts:

Whitstable harbour was the world’s first railway connected port.

The oyster is both male and female, but never both at the same time.

Spawn is emitted from an oyster in immense quantities, like a puff of smoke, estimated to contain from 800,000 to some millions of organisms.

The oyster’s worst enemy is the five-fingers (starfish), which can force an oyster shell open.

The Canterbury and Whitstable Railway - known locally as the Crab & Winkle line, produced the world’s first railway season ticket.

The sea diving helmet and suit were invented in Whitstable.

The Whitstable Divers travelled around the world salvaging sunken ships, including the Mary Rose.

400 years ago the lower areas of Whitstable were swampy salt marshes - The Sea has tried to take them back several times.

2000-year-old oyster shells found in Italy have been proved to have originated in Whitstable.

A few years ago I had the wonderful experience of going on a Safari in Kenya; staying at excellent lodges throughout the trip. One of them being an the shores of Lake Naivasha, but wow, if I’d come across the privately owned Hippo Point Wildlife Sanctuary this would have been the icing on the cake!
Hippo Point Tower

Hippo Point House is an Elizabethan style house belonged to a magistrate and was built in the 1933. The house has recently been restored to the higest standards with just seven double bedrooms, a swimming pool, open gazebo and lush gardens where you can indulge in yoga courses and body treatments. However the nearby Hippo Point Tower is really where its at! This nine storey Tower is rated as one of the top retreats in the world, and one of Kenya’s less known, but most luxurious hideaways. It is for exclusive use only and had a lounge and deck on the first floor and three double bedrooms - one on each floor above.

With magnificent views over Oloidien Bay it’s designed for romantics (by Dodo Cunningham-Reid) and guests are able to watch the hippo’s grazing at the foot of the Tower.

Fed up with paying singles supplements and dining alone? Don’t want to sign up for tacky singles hol
idays or advertise for a travelling companion? Do want un-limited choices regarding where and when to go and discover where locals go and avoid tourist traps? Oh, and possibly travelling on a budget?
The concept of couchsurfing could be the solution for you. It’s a non profit-making organisation / project funded by those who join up and make a donation for doing so. The amount donated is up to the individual, especially because of the disparities between different countries economies. Once you are signed up you can offer your couch (or spare room / camping bed / even floor) as somewhere for others to stay, and of course surf to find other peoples couches for you to stay on. Of course this isn’t for everyone, but there is a definite group of people to whom it appeals. So far they have over a million members in 232 countries and more signing up every day. It has to be said that the majority of members / hosts are young (85% are between ages 18 and 34).

The ‘big apple’ is busily converting a disused, elevated railway line that runs down the Manhattan Island’s West Side (meatpacking district) into a public park between 18 and 30 foot above street level. When complete the park will be a mile and a half long and no more than 60ft wide at its broadest. With a hefty $170m price tag the park will combine meandering concrete pathways, naturalistic planting, fixed and movable seating, lighting, water features, children’s play areas and viewing platforms to give the public space broad appeal. There will be three access points from street level (every two or three blocks) and most will have elevators in addition to stairways.

When most of us think of the Maldives we conjure up visions of empty white sandy beaches, palm trees and luxury. Well, Havafen Fushi takes such visions to new heights, or should I say new depths with its claims to be the world’s first underwater spa.

The resort has found itself on the Conde Nast Traveler gold list in 2007, and named best beach resort by Harper’s Bazaar in 2008. So, what is all the fuss about?

Firstly, the setting helps – its set in a lagoon on a pristine island (a 30 minute speed boat ride from the international airport). The ‘Lime Spa’ includes an under-water treatment room – seriously relaxing while you are having treatments, flotation pool, yoga pavilion, and six over-water glass-floored treatment rooms. There are a range of differently styled bungalows and pavilions to choose from – some over-water (with infinity pools and Jacuzzi), some on the beach, but are well equipped with Bose technology, plasma screens, Culti luxuries in the bathroom and a guide to dreams by your bed!

Why not visit the Medway Sweeps Festival (Rochester, Kent, UK) for a very traditional / pagan British experience.

The Medway Sweeps Festival started life some 400 years ago, when it was commonplace for children (in addition to men) to be sent up chimneys as sweeps. As a diversion this holiday (traditionally held in May) was market by a procession through the streets of Rochester and a ‘Jack-in-the-Green’ ceremony which was held at Dawn and involved the ‘waking’ of a 7 foot character.

Fortunately the practice of child sweeps was outlawed in 1896 (by the Climbing Boys Act) and the festival ceased in the early 1900’s until its resurrection in 1981.

Annually in March (in 2009 it will be on the 28th March) the beautiful, rich and famous of Monaco attend the state’s famous Rose Ball at the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club. Established in 1954 by Princess Grace (and now hosted by Princess Caroline) the Rose Ball is a charity event in aid of the Princess Grace Foundation, and is open to anyone who wants to / can afford to buy a ticket.

For a cool 750Euros a ticket you can dine, sup champagne, dance and be entertained and join in with the theme (in past years have included Jamaican Reggae and Spanish movida). The theme for 2009 is ‘Rock’n’Roll’. Whilst the tickets certainly aren’t cheap it isn’t every day you can buy the opportunity to mingle with Royalty and A-listers is it?!

You don’t have to be a celebrity to go on your own bush tucker trial!
Head to Hokitika on the south island of New Zealand on 13th - 15th March to sample the ‘delights’ on offer! Join the crowds who have been lured here with a curiosity for strange flavours. Fancy swallowing crickets, chewing slugs, gobbling sheep’s eyes and nibbling on sausages made from bulls’ penise, you pay’s your money and you take your choice!

Hokitika is a tiny, beautiful town in the middle of the wild, cold, wet, and did I say wild? West Coast of the southern island of New Zealand. It’s known as the “Greenstone (New Zealand Jade) Capital of the World,” the small seaside town is not much more than a few shops with a beach reputed to wash up jade along the shore. Every spring over 15,000 travelers, tourists, locals, and freaks descend upon the village to put their mouth where their money is and eat all manner of cuisine from the forests, farmland, and ocean waters of New Zealand.

This years Tedfest is being held on February 26, 2009 to March 1, but it’s sold out! However there is a second ‘coming’. Be quick, tickets sell out as fast as they are offered! The second coming is being held on Thursday 5 March to Sunday 8 March; you know you want to go so, go on, go on, go on! Festival numbers are apparently restircted by the size of the island upon which it is held.

For those of you scratching your heads in utter bewilderment as to what this is all about, it’s based on the wonderful cult series Father Ted ‘set on ‘Craggy Island’ with the three batty priests’, and is a few days of totally off-the-wall madness. Anyone that knows the series will understand it means, madness, mayhem and utter chaos. If you have never seen it, oh boy you’ve missed a treat, ‘google’ Father Ted, or better still invest in some DVD’s, I can assure you they will be watched many, many times over!

There are so many wonderful ‘free’ beaches around the world it was difficult to compile a list, but here is my top ten ‘for now’. If you beg to differ add your own favourites as comments at the bottom of this article – who knows we may even conduct a survey soon to see if we can go definitive!

From north to south:

1. Bellevue Beach, Klapenburg, Denmark

This beach can get crowded on sunny days, as it’s only six miles north of Copenhagen. It attracts a young crowd – though of course all are welcome. The beach itself is beautiful, clear water and stone-free sand make it perfect for beach and water sports. There does appear to be a slightly strange rule here – walking in the nude is forbidden, but swimming and sunbathing is legal! There is a wonderful view of Sweden and the amazing Bresund Bridge that links the two countries. The northern part of the beach is a known gay area.
