Where to go in January

Here are trip inspirations recommendations for places to go and things to do in January – so beat the winter blues and getaway….!

For Nature &Wildlife:
Galapagos Islands – this is a great time for seeing the giant tortoises, sea lions, penguins and marine iguanas
Chobe National Park (Savuti Marsh area) in Botswana for the zebra migration.  This is the third largest park in Botswana but it the most diverse and spectacular.  The park also has the highest concentration of elephants in Africa.

Kenya – for Masai Mara Safaris as it is warm and dry, although the wildebeast migration occurs from June to September but it is the rainy season and can be pretty crowded.  You are advised to seek advise from embassy at the moment regarding safety.  See Giraffe Manor Article and Tree Tops Article

For a Family Holiday:
Dubai – this is a great time to visit this year-round resort as it isn’t too hot but there is guaranteed sun.  Dubai has great beaches, excellent duty free shopping, and trips into the mountains and dunes.
Thailand – great time to go regarding the temperature, rainfall is light and humidity low.  Lots to do and see from beautiful beaches, numerous temples, elephant orphanages, great shopping, extremely friendly people and wonderful food. For a great place to stay try Mom Tri’s Boathouse Blog Article

For Romantic Getaways / Honeymoons:
The Caribbean – not the hurricane season, the best climate so prices are high (but not as bad as the Christmas holiday season).  Can be reasonably quiet the first two weeks in Jan and the ‘it’ crew are all seeking snow!

For Sight Seeing and Culture Vultures:
Egypt – is good anytime between November and early April as it is coolest.  You are likely to pay more than during the summer months, but it’s worth avoiding the extreme temperatures!

Australia for Sydney Arts Festival – From January 5th to January 26th has many free outdoor events which attracts some 1 million visitors per annum.Sydney Festival Article
India for Bikaner Camel Fair – in 2008 this will be held on 21st and 22nd JanBikaner Camel Festival Article
Kerela, Southern India – for the   Elephant Festival Article

For Adrenaline Junkies:
Latvia – for Bob Sledding – see http://www.balticadventures.co.uk
Galapagos – this is the best month for diving in Galapagos as the water is at is clearest

For a City Break:
St Petersberg – don’t let the snow and sub-zero temperatures put you off which seem to make it more romantic and beautiful, especially Catherine Palace.

For Music Lovers:
Canary Islands -   Festival de Musica de Canaries Article

For Foodies:
Tucson – Slow Food Festival – to see classic food films and participate in culinary events
Brooklyn, New York – 16th January for the vegan Buffalo wing contest.  Contestants have 15 minutes to eat as many fiery hot veggie wings as possible.  Hum, think I’ll give this one a miss!
North Carolina, America – Jan 26th Krispy Kreme Challenge – for the unaware – Krispy Kremes are particularly delicious donuts!!  I’m more tempted by this one.

For Something a little different:
Thailand – Chang Mai Borsang Umbrella Festival (in 2008 from the 17th to 19th Jan)

South Australia – specifically ‘Port Lincoln’ for Tuna throwing competition!

For ‘Celeb’ Spotting:
Utah, America for the Sundance Festival – where you can view free short films and play spot the actor
Klosters (Switzerland) – this is where the British Royals often head for skiing anytime during the alpine skiing season, especially Princes Charles, William and Harry.  Sarah Ferguson and Tara Palmer Tomkinson also make appearances.

Not recommended in January:
Madagascar – because it’s the rainy season and hurricanes are possible
Bermuda – because it can be cold and windy
Peru – because the Inca trail treks are closed
