Voodoo Music Festival, New Orleans

Since 1999, on the week-end closest to Halloween, New Orleans hosts a music festival which now boasts over 100 rock bands and musicians performing.  So if you want to do something different from the usual ‘trick or treating’ events you may want to grab yourself some tickets.

In 2007 the event is due to be held from 26th to 28th October in City Park.  As this festival really is all about the music the best thing is to give you an idea of the sort of music hosted - here are some of the big names booked for 2007:

  • The Smashing Pumpkins
  • Sinead O’Conner
  • The Black Crowes
  • Dr John
  • Tiesto
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
  • Fall Out Boy

Previous year’s line-ups have included:
Red Hot Chilli Peppers

  • Duran Duran
  • My Chemical Romance
  • The Beastie Boys
  • Eminem
  • Iggy Pop
  • The White Stripes

  • imageDr John

There are 3 distinct performance areas:
Le Ritual – has 2 stages where the more famous bands play
Flambeau – celebrates New Orleans’ influences, and has a crafts area in addition to the music
Le Carnival - dedicated to underground arts and bohemian culture of New Orleans, with extreme genres of music

You can buy tickets for single days or the entire week-end, and there are usually a few VIP all-access passes available too.  Once the festival ends many of the local clubs offer post-Voodoo late-night concerts in the French Quarter and Downtown (generally only 15 minutes drive away from City Park)

The festival had a forced break from the public due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (when free concerts were held for fire-fighters, police officers and volunteers who has offered assistance), but the festival now back with a vengeance!
