The York and Albany, London

Can there be a reader who hasn’t heard of the infamous chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsay?  Well, how many of you knew that he can now add hotelier to his cv?

Overlooking Regents Park (at the northern end, in Camden), Ramsay Holdings riginally bought the previously derelict pub for another eaterie, but decided that the building could be turned into something more.  The York and Albany London (not to be confused with the New York hotel) has only just opened (21st September 2008) after an estimated £4million spend, but will it be a success?

Well, if looks and food are to go by – probably.  Russell Sage designed the interior and has managed to blend antique and contemporary.  The overall feel is a bit like a discrete gentleman’s club.  Small and perfectly formed, this boutique style hotel comprises just 10 bedrooms that cost around £180 per night with four grades of room – all have Egyptian cotton sheets, one deluxe room has a large four poster bed and there are two luxury suites.

There are two restaurants and the food is surprisingly reasonably priced for a Ramsay restaurant at around £30-£50 per head for dinner and a set 3 course lunch at £15.  Reviews suggest they retain the Ramsay Holdings brand trademark high quality.  The restaurants are overseen by Angela Hartnett (who has also overseen the whole project) and the head chef is Colin Buchan.  Having eaten at both Ramsay’s Maze Restaurant and Boxwood café I feel this place has to be worth checking out – if only for the food!
