Radisson SAS Hotel, Berlin
Opened in December 2003, this 5 star hotel in the centre of Berlin (5 minute walk from the central railway station) contains the world’s largest acrylic glass cylindrical aquarium in the world. Situated in the hotel lobby / atrium the aquarium is a centre-piece for the hotel, and some of the interior rooms and suites look out over the aquarium.
A glass elevator travels through the middle of the aquarium to a sightseeing point and restaurant under the glass roof (there is a 4 euro charge for this if you are not resident of the hotel).
Here are some basic facts about the aquarium:
• The cylinder diameter is over 11 meters and is 25 meters high
• The cylinder holds some 900,000 litres of seawater
• The cylinder is home to some 56 species of fish – housing approx 2,600 fish in total
• 2 full-time divers are employed to care for the fish and maintain the aquarium
• The cylinder cost about 12.8 million euros to build / install
• The glass cylinder was constructed by Reynolds Polymner Technology (a U.S firm)
• The cylinder sits on a concrete foundation 9 meters deep

Ironically some guests who have recently posted reviews of their stays at this hotel on trip-adviser have reported problems with the water-temperature in the bathrooms!! Others have stated they thought the hotel expensive and not up to 5 star standard so perhaps it is worth paying the 4 euro’s for the elevator experience rather than actually staying here.
