250 miles within the Arctic Circle (at Saariselka) lies Hotel Kakslauttanen.  It is a 30 minute transfer from Ivalo airport.

There are a number of different room types available:

Snow Igloos
– of which about 20 are constructed annually for habitation between December through April.  Here you will be provided with special sleeping bags (good for temperatures as ‘cool’ as -32C, woollen socks and hoods – both a must!  The snow igloos accommodate from 1 to 5 people.  There are other places you can sleep in snow igloos – see http?  So the really interesting thing about this place are the other rooms available:

Glass Igloos – this is where it’s at!!  It’s a great way to experience the northern lights as you lie on your bed in a comfortable room (the best viewing time is between late August and late April).  The glass igloos are built from special thermo glass which fortunately keeps the rooms at a normal room temperature.  Also, the glass doesn’t frost up (even when its -20C outside), which would spoil viewing.  These igloos have luxury beds and toilet facilities. Unfortunately you can’t take cases into these rooms, they have to be stored elsewhere.

Glass Kota – again made from thermo glass, this room is 8 meters high by 8 meters in diameter, are Lapp tepee shaped, and again give great northern light viewing.

Log Cabins – fairly typical cabins complete with log fires

Other facilities are:
• Snow Restaurant – can seat 150 people, cups are made from ice
• World Largest Smoke Sauna’s – of course!
• Swimming in ice pools – if you’re ‘man’ enough
• Ice Gallery – the best ice sculptors in the world participate in the International ice-sculpting week at Kakslauttanen in December.  Guests can also try their hand at being creative with ice
• Ice Chapel – very popular for wedding ceremonies
• Husky safari trips
• Snowmobile safaris
• Reindeer Rides
