Festival de Musica de Canaries, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, Europe

Posted by Jackie Hewett on Fri 4th January 2008 at 01:14 AM, Filed in EuropeJanuaryFebruary

Classical music isn’t something commonly associated with the Canary Islands, however since 1984 Gran Canaria and Tenerife have hosted a classical music festival with three aims in mind:

1. To progress a tradition of such music on the Islands that started when European Opera companies stopped at the Islands en-route for the South America’
2. To promote the cultural aspect of the Islands and broaden the perception of the islands as being purely about beaches and sun
3. To encourage tourism – helped by the fact that it is the only European music festival held in the winter

In addition to featuring already world renown orchestra’s, soloists and conductors the festival also showcases some of the best artists Spain has to offer such as the Orfeón Donostiarra (an excellent Choir from the Basque region), the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Caneria.
In 2008 the festival starts on 10th January and ends on the 1st March.

imageAlfredo Kraus Auditorium

Many of the concerts on Gran Canaria are held in the beautiful Alfredo Kraus Auditorium which was completed in December 1997 in honour of the famous Spanish tenor of the same name.  By night or day the building is distinctive - a lantern in the roof of the auditorium building illuminates the entire structure at night and from the sea some liken the building to a lighthouse.  By day the light coloured stone of the building contrasts with the volcanic rock surrounding it in Confital Bay.
