Edinburgh International Festival, Scotland

Everyone should visit the Edinburgh Festival at least once in their lifetime! I went in my 20’s with a friend, we were pretty broke but still found heaps to do.
In 2008 the festival is going on from 8th to 31st August and there will be events to suit all tastes and pockets including:
• Classical Music
• Opera
• Ballet
• Music - Jazz,
• Theatre
• Fringe
• Street entertainment / buskers
One of the highlights is to go and watch the world famous Military Tattoo (finishes on the 23rd Aug) which is one of the finest military shows culminating in a great firework display. In my experience it can get a bit cold (you’ll be sitting outside) so do take a coat – even if it’s a warm evening as it can be quite breezy.
There are quite few festivals going on simultaneously that overlap and seem to merge into one:
• Fringe Festival – 3rd – 25th Aug
• Arts Festival – 31st July – 31st Aug
• Mela Festival – 25th – 31st Aug
• Blues & Jazz Festival 25th July – 3rd Aug
• Book Festival - 9th – 25th Aug
During the fringe festival every day an A3 sheet is produced listing everything going on and you can be busy from 9am until the small hours, some events will need to be booked in advanced, others you can just turn up. Many now famous comedians have been discovered here.
During festival time the streets of Edinburgh have a wonderful jovial feel and there is plenty to do besides the festival. You can visit the castle and the Royal Mile, go shopping down Princes Street, visit one of the museums, take a ghost walk or go to the Scotch Whiskey Heritage Centre.
