Pirates Week commemorates the times past when the Cayman Islands where the haunt of buccaneers and pirates – actually it’s not a week it’s 11 days…but who’s counting when you’re having such a good time.
This event has been taking place for the last 30 years and starts with the morning arrival - or is it the invasion - of the pirates on board a replica on a 17th century Spanish Galleon. Waiting on the dock is Grand Cayman’s governor – who, much to the delight of the tourist and locals is captured - and symbolically locked up for the week, so the pirates can take over the Island!
At 2.00 the festivities start in earnest with live entertainment on the beach at Hog Sty Bay. An hour later the pirates parade through the city of Georgetown. Later in the evening the day ends with a food and dance festival that spreads throughout the local streets. Everyone is encouraged to dress up at add to the atmosphere
The next day the fun continues with visitors and locals mix with the pirates; visiting the street fair, watching performers, playing games – the brave ones can join in the underwater treasure hunt!
Throughout the following days there are events to join in all over the Islands, live music, party’s, food festivals, heritage days, sports events, fireworks, street dancing – a lot of the events are away from the Georgetown giving visitors the chance to visit villages and parts of the Island they would not usually go to.
