Amanpulo Resort,Pamalican Island, Philippines

Fed up with the credit crunch and the cold weather?  Looking for an escape to somewhere off-the-beaten track?  Perhaps even a romantic break or planning a honeymoon?  Amanpulo resort could be the place for you.

Less well known that the Maldives and Mauritius, but with similar credentials this resort is on its own private island in the south-seas has ‘casitas’ and villas with a choice of 3 different casita styles / locations – 29 Beach (private paths to the beach), 5 Hillside (great views) and 4 Treetop (no prizes for guessing!).  The 9 villas of varying sizes accommodate larger parties averaging 4 bedrooms per villa.

Whichever type of accommodation you choose they are all beautifully equipped – king sized beds, marble bathrooms, flat screen tv’s, DVD/CDplayers, I-Pod docking stations, surround sound, beautiful wooden sun decks, coffee makers and complimentary hats, slippers and beach bags that you are invited to keep as souvenirs.  Each room has its own golf buggy for you to use for island exploration.

The resort has all the facilities you would expect – a restaurant serving Asian and Continental cuisine, seafood and Spanish cuisine, a beach-club serving snacks, a Lagoon Club serving breakfast lunch and dinner, A sea sports club (snorkelling, scuba diving and boat hire are all available), a well stocked library, 3 boutiques, meeting rooms, massage and beauty treatments, tennis courts, internet and wi-fi access, and of course a swimming pool

None of this comes cheap – the treetops castita’s start at $750 off season and the largest villa’s $4,000 per night peak season.  The hotel organise your own private transfer by plane to get there for which there is an additional charge.  But a resort that has won a host of awards from Conde Nast Traveller, Harpers and Queen, to Gallivanter’s Guide you wouldn’t expect it to be!  It does have some of the best reviews I have ever read on Trip Adviser – with one or two disgruntled customers finding the food not as good as expected – but I’d be extremely surprised to find absolutely nothing negative – but looking at the photo’s I and taking the reviews on balance think I’d give it a go if I had a spare £7k or so for a week.
