250 miles within the Arctic Circle (at Saariselka) lies Hotel Kakslauttanen.  It is a 30 minute transfer from Ivalo airport.

There are a number of different room types available:

Snow Igloos
– of which about 20 are constructed annually for habitation between December through April.  Here you will be provided with special sleeping bags (good for temperatures as ‘cool’ as -32C, woollen socks and hoods – both a must!  The snow igloos accommodate from 1 to 5 people.  There are other places you can sleep in snow igloos – see http?  So the really interesting thing about this place are the other rooms available:

6-16th November

If you are looking for a fun packed week with a theme - that’s suitable for children ‘of all ages’ - read on!

Pirates Week commemorates the times past when the Cayman Islands where the haunt of buccaneers and pirates – actually it’s not a week it’s 11 days…but who’s counting when you’re having such a good time.

This event has been taking place for the last 30 years and starts with the morning arrival - or is it the invasion - of the pirates on board a replica on a 17th century Spanish Galleon. Waiting on the dock is Grand Cayman’s governor – who, much to the delight of the tourist and locals is captured - and symbolically locked up for the week, so the pirates can take over the Island!

Most of us are aware of the various Ice Hotels throughout the world – which are truly amazing but - IGLU DORF (Igloo Village) – takes the experience to another level (or depth) depending on your point of view. There are 6 igloo villages - all in Ski resorts, four in Switzerland, one Germany, and one in Andorra.

What’s on offer, and how are they constructed?

Each village is constructed from scratch each year.  Enormous balloons are inflated (not by blowing into them!) they are then covered in snow. All the igloo’s are connected by tunnels, viewed from the outside the village gives the impression of just being a huge pile of snow with a few entrances.

Most of us have heard of, seen or even own underwater cameras, but this gadget takes it to a whole new level.

A company called ‘Liquid Image’ have now built a digital camera into some (it has to be said fairly chunky) goggles.  But having your hands free must compensate for slightly heavier eyewear.

Waterproof to 5 meters (15 feet) there are 2 options - 3.1 and 5 mega pixels, both run on simple AA batteries.  The camera does have some inbuilt RAM and you can use a memory card too.  The camera also takes movies and reviews say the microphone picks up rather a lot of noise.  Cross hairs in the lenses enable you to focus on your subject and of course it comes with software for downloading the results.

Retailing in the UK from around £60 they look like a lot of fun – but will swimming pools ever be safe again?
