I attended Universal’s Halloween Horror Night in October 2008. For quite a few years Universal have been putting on an adult themed Halloween evenings in the park which have allegedly improved year on year. Each year has a different ‘theme’, and this year’s was ‘Bloody Mary’.
Firstly, some practical details – there are a number of different tickets available. The evenings happen over 2-3 weeks in the lead up to, and including Halloween itself, but not on every night - usually not on Monday’s and Tuesdays. Sometimes they even go on a couple of days past Halloween. You can get single night admission (this year they were available via several sources from about $44) or get a ‘Frequent Fear Pass’ for $69 which is valid for several nights, but excluding Halloween itself. To attend on Halloween itself you will have to pay more, but I understand there is little extra happening on that night – you are just paying to be there on the specific day. Also, if you already have a valid Universal Park day time ticket for the day you wish to attend a Horror Night (other than the 31st) you can get re-admission for the evening Horror night for $29 per person (which is what we did) – and this includes the Orlando Flex Park tickets whether or not you have attended that particular park on the same day – so long as the ticket is actually valid for that day.

Horror nights at Orlando Florida’s Universal Studios theme parks are meant to be the ultimate place for ‘grown ups’ (?) to enjoy a spooky Halloween themed evening. They take place on quite a number of evenings every October. Actors in all manner of costumes mingle and interact with the ‘guests’ in addition to several special Halloween only shows. I will be going to this year’s event and will post up a review early November when I return.

As this an adults only thing (really not suitable for kids) there are no discounted kiddy tickets available. Many of the tickets available are multi-night tickets (called frequent fear passes) and cost around $70 / £40 – but these do not let you in on Halloween evening itself – for that evening you have to pay extra. I I have found a couple of good deals if you are willing to do on a night other than Halloween itself:
Tickets for two adults for one horror night entrance (Sunday through Thursday) and hotel accommodation for 2 nights for $79 through Orlando-Florida.net
Single adult ticket for one horror night (Sunday through Thursday) for $45 through Orlando Fun Tickets
If you can’t get enough of that BBQ flavour, or want to pick up some tips on how to cook the best BBQ food this could just be the event for you!
2nd to 5th October 2008 sees the 29th occurrence of the largest BBQ contest in the world with some 500 teams competing. Contestants have to cook 10 pounds of meat (beef, pork or lamb) and are awarded marks out of 10 for their efforts.

This is a festival for serious ‘foodies’. This year it starts on 4th October and runs until 9th November (when the white truffle season begins). White truffles are considered to be the ‘Rolls Royce’ of truffles and far superior to their black cousins.

Usually a number of the world’s top chefs (or their representatives) fly in for an invitation-only truffle auction that starts at 8am and is where some of the finest truffles change hands (for up to £1,600 per kilo). The vendors are usually local farmers supplementing their annual income, assuming their have managed to find some during the 4-5 week season.

Since 1999, on the week-end closest to Halloween, New Orleans hosts a music festival which now boasts over 100 rock bands and musicians performing. So if you want to do something different from the usual ‘trick or treating’ events you may want to grab yourself some tickets.

In 2007 the event is due to be held from 26th to 28th October in City Park. As this festival really is all about the music the best thing is to give you an idea of the sort of music hosted - here are some of the big names booked for 2007:
- The Smashing Pumpkins
- Sinead O’Conner
- The Black Crowes
- Dr John
- Tiesto
- Rage Against the Machine
- Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
- Fall Out Boy
