A few years ago I visited Tenerife with my significant other, and for me it was too commercial. Fuerteventura sounded a good option after my younger sister (who’s not a naturist) had visited and mentioned that the beach at her hotel the ‘Sol Elite Gorriones’ might suit us, as she’d noticed people ‘in the nuddie’ on the few occasions she had used it.

The majority of visitors to Fuerteventura come for the beaches, over 50 km of glorious clean white and golden sands, small bays and sweeping stretches to tempt sunbathers. The landscape is filled with ridges and crests of sand (like golden mountains) that sweep down to the bright blue sea. It’s a windsurfers paradise.  The wind that seems to come out of nowhere …sometimes threatening the pleasures to be had on the beach! The island is not as commercialised as many others in the Canaries, people tend to come for the beaches and the relative peace and quiet….or the super fit for the joy of wave sailing.

It’s an extraordinary stark island, but totally unique with it’s own special grandeur. Wonderful evening skies that send patterns of mauve and cerise across the mountains.

Go naked on holiday! What me? Show all my bits and pieces to complete strangers! You’re having a laugh? The size and shape of me undressed – not a pretty sight, now if I were drop dead fantastic that might be a different thing….

Actually it wouldn’t. That’s the joy of naturism.  It honestly doesn’t matter what you look like…believe me, I’ve done it, been there, but no T shirt as I didn’t wear one – or anything else come to think of it!

Naturism is one of life’s levellers. You are, for once, without the trappings of expensive (or even Primark) clothes, or any bling jewellery to show how wealthy you are as no-one bothers with trappings. No-one will know if you’re a millionaire, or living in abject poverty.  You’ll be accepted for yourself, what you are inside – no pretence, no vanity, no outer mask. We’ve all got the same basic anatomy – OK, different shapes and sizes, but so what, variety is the spice of life. Would you want to be a clone of everyone else you see?

Cap D’Agde (situated in the Languedoc region in the South West of France), was my first introduction to Naturist Holidays many years ago. My (then boyfriend) now husband suggested we go, so after a bit of persuasion I agreed.  You either love it or hate it, there is no in between!

For some people it is the epitome of a naturist holiday – you don’t have to leave the resort, everything you will need is there; for others, it’s brash, commercialised and decadent!

My first impression was of a charm-less concrete jungle, a guarded entrance barrier, what had I come to, a prison camp with sun and sea?  No prison uniform here, in fact no clothes permitted if the sun was out, so everyone walking around totally in the buff! I felt uncomfortable for a couple of days, draping a towel over my ‘nether’ regions whenever possible. But then, I realised that no one actually cared about my physical imperfections – too many to mention – and were accepting me for who I was and not what I looked like…. a completely liberating experience for shy me! The Cap D’Agde experience grew on me, and felt totally normal as I relaxed into its unique ambiance!

Skiathos is one of the most cosmopolitan islands in the Aegean, and, with its lush green vegetation, glorious sandy beaches it must rank highly as being among the most beautiful.

It maybe small in area, but being in easy reach of other Islands and mainland treasures it certainly doesn’t feel claustrophobic. There is only one main road leading from Skiathos town all the way to the other end of the Island at Koukounaries, with small villages in between all having sandy (textile) beaches. As you look out to sea while driving or walking along the road your eyes will be draw to the picture postcard deep blue of the Aegean and the myriad verdant small islands just waiting to be explored.
