This festival (Parada Ng Lechon) is definitely unusual!
In Balayan on the south coast of the Luzon (Phillipines) the night before the festival an anniversary ball is held at the town plaza when the ‘lechon queen’ is crowned. Then, on the 24th June some 50 roasted suckling pigs are blessed in the name of St John the baptist (their patron saint). The pigs are then paraded through the streets dressed in their finest (T’Shirts, ceremonial clothes, raincoats and sun glasses). After the end of the parade the pigs are devoured in a feast (make sure you are hungry!).
But be prepared to get wet as well as fed. As the parade coincides with / marks the feast of John the Baptist and the theme of baptism spills (sic) over to this parade. After lunch the town embarks on a huge water fight with water pistols and water thrown from moving cars.

Location; Newperran Holiday Park – a short distance from Newquay, and only two and a half miles from the beach. The Holiday Park has previously won gold and silver awards in the ‘Camping and Trailer Magazine’ “campsite of the year awards, and has also been named as one of the top ten touring parks in Cornwall. The naturist beach at Perran sands is close by. There are 400 pitches so there is plenty of space for all.

Every June since 1983, in a small town about 40 miles south of Paris, a three day music festival that show cases a particular ‘flavour’ of jazz music.
It is in Samois-sur-Seine that Django Reinhardt died whilst fishing in 1953 at the age of 42, having settled there 2 years previously. This gypsy festival attracts many Romany caravans with many making a sort of pilgrimage to commemorate and celebrate the life and unique style of Django’s music.
To use a clichéd pop-idol term, Django made the gypsy style of jazz guitar ‘his own’. This style features primarily acoustic guitar and violin, which are used in a very distinctive percussion-like style. Django frequently use to ‘pair-up’ with Stephane Grappelli for live performances and in the recording studio. Amazingly Django still managed to play well after losing 2 fingers on his left hand in a fire.

So just how much do you love her?!!
Why not go and participate (or watch) the annual championship for the ‘sport’ of wife carrying, held in Sonkajärvi, Finland every June? You could even get into the Guinness book of records (seriously!).
A male has to carry a female over a 254 meter track with obstacles (including waist high water). There are rules and regulations regarding the wife’s weight and she must be over 17 years old, but she doesn’t have to be your own wife! There are no regulations regarding the style of carrying – but the favoured seems to be ‘Estonian style’ whereby the wife hangs upside down with her legs around the husbands shoulders. The event is staged over a series of heats (only 2 ‘teams’ go at a time) and in addition to the fastest, there are also prizes for the most entertaining couple, the best costume and the strongest carrier.
Apparently the sport has its roots in an alleged custom whereby Finnish men courted women by running into their village, picking them up and carrying them off. Sophisticated! Presumably such shows of strength were an indication of virility?!!
The prize? The woman’s weight in beer!
