This hotel is billed as a work of ‘living art’.  All 30 rooms and objects have been created / custom made by a German artist called Lars Stroschen.  Nothing has been bought.  The intention is that each room has its own very unique ambience.

Not all bedrooms have private bathrooms so you may want to choose your room carefully.

Opened in December 2003, this 5 star hotel in the centre of Berlin (5 minute walk from the central railway station) contains the world’s largest acrylic glass cylindrical aquarium in the world.  Situated in the hotel lobby / atrium the aquarium is a centre-piece for the hotel, and some of the interior rooms and suites look out over the aquarium.

A glass elevator travels through the middle of the aquarium to a sightseeing point and restaurant under the glass roof (there is a 4 euro charge for this if you are not resident of the hotel).

Airlines are always looking for new ways to put ‘bums on seats’. Well - here is a new and novel way! Not just bums on seats…..but bare bums on hygienic cloths! No, the passengers are not (we hope) incontinent – just totally in the buff – this is the first airline to offer Nudist flying. Giving a new meaning to the term ‘landing strip’!

OssiUrlaub – a tour operator based in Erfurt Germany are flying passengers ‘au natural’ on clothes free flights to the naturist beaches on the Baltic island of Usedom. So, not only do passengers check in their baggage, but also their clothes before they take off. No fears of concealed weapons (of any description) on these flights!

If you’ve visited Japan or are Japanese the ‘Yotel’ capsule style hotels may not seem that unusual, but they are a new concept for the UK (already open at Gatwick and Heathrow terminal 4), Netherlands (soon opening in Amsterdam) and potentially New York.  They could prove an excellent solution if you have a very early morning flight and live some distance from these airports.  The rooms can also be rented for a minimum of four hours and thereafter by the hour which could also provide a haven if you have a number of hours to kill at the airport.

Yotel is the brainchild of Simon Woodroffe (of YO Sushi fame) with rooms not quite as small as their Japanese ‘cousins’.  There are two differently sized rooms, both with breathable mattresses, en-suites, flat screen tv’s with 60 tv channels, 80 radio channels and 24 hour room service (ordered via the tv).  The standard rooms (or cabins in Yo-speak) have a ‘large single’ bed that it said to accommodate 2 people – possibly adequately if you are both unhealthy size zero.  The premium cabins have a couch that converts to a double bed at the touch of a button with under-bed storage for suitcases and about 2ft space around the bed when it is extended.

Classical music isn’t something commonly associated with the Canary Islands, however since 1984 Gran Canaria and Tenerife have hosted a classical music festival with three aims in mind:

1. To progress a tradition of such music on the Islands that started when European Opera companies stopped at the Islands en-route for the South America’
2. To promote the cultural aspect of the Islands and broaden the perception of the islands as being purely about beaches and sun
3. To encourage tourism – helped by the fact that it is the only European music festival held in the winter
