I have just returned from an all-inclusive Turkey – at the Xanadu Resort Hotel. Having stayed on other all-inclusive holidays, in the Caribbean and Turkey, and experienced the wonderful hospitality and luxury of Thailand I had high expectations; this holiday exceeded them! Incredible value for money, the ultimate in luxury, and the most relaxing and pampered 14 days I have ever had.

What made it so special?

Was it the beautifully appointed bathrooms and fluffy white dressing gowns?

Was it the 5-star service throughout the hotel?

Was it the fantastic quality of the food for each meal?….as opposed to a lot of all inclusive holidays, the maxim of the Xanadu is quality – rather than the usual vast quantities of everything tasting the same for 14 days. The breakfasts and lunches were superb.

Since 1999, on the week-end closest to Halloween, New Orleans hosts a music festival which now boasts over 100 rock bands and musicians performing.  So if you want to do something different from the usual ‘trick or treating’ events you may want to grab yourself some tickets.

In 2007 the event is due to be held from 26th to 28th October in City Park.  As this festival really is all about the music the best thing is to give you an idea of the sort of music hosted - here are some of the big names booked for 2007:

  • The Smashing Pumpkins
  • Sinead O’Conner
  • The Black Crowes
  • Dr John
  • Tiesto
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
  • Fall Out Boy

This 10 day festival (end of October) was started in 1979 to boost tourism, and hence the economy, of the Keys.  October boasts a beautiful climate for seeing the region, but was previously a slow time when retailers traditionally boarded up their shops and went away themselves.

The festival started life primarily as a gay party, but is now a lot more besides including balls, costume competitions, family-friendly parades, pet parades (where dogs, cats ducks and even ferrets have costumes), street parties, drag queen contests and AIDS fundraising events.  Some even say the event rivals the New Orleans Mardi Gras.

Kyrenia is an intriguing mixture of old and new with its 6000 year long history is an idyllic Mediterranean town. It’s bounded to the north by the sea, and to the south by the Fivefinger Besmark mountain range and offers some of the most magnificent scenery on the Island.

Shops selling traditional items rub shoulders with designer outlets, jewellery shops and bespoke tailors. During the day it’s a sleepy town, an easy place to while time, with holidaymakers searching for bargains, maybe being measured up for pairs of trousers or suits.  A word of caution, do make sure you understand the quotation you are given for items.  We had two pairs of trousers made-to-measure for which we were quoted a figure that we thought was for both pairs.  When we returned to collect them it became apparent that the price was per pair of trousers.  While cheap by UK standard for made to measure – not quite the bargain we were anticipating.

Louisville USA – October 6-7, 11-14, 18-21, 25-28, 2007, held at the Louisville Zoo.

This is one for the kids, not actually on the night of Halloween, but on the four weekends in October leading up to Halloween. If your kids find scary just too much to cope with, then this is for them; a sweet, fun filled early evening event more storybook than frightening.

It’s full of children’s favourite characters and gentle trick or treating for the under 11’s.

Who will they meet and what will they see as they wander round the Zoo?

The giant talking pumpkin – Mumpkin, greets all the visitors to the evening when they arrive

See Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
